Camus [kamü] Albert, ur. 7 XI 1913, Mondovi (ob. Deran, Algieria), zm. 4 I 1960, Villeblevin (dep. Yonne, Francja), francuski pisarz, eseista i publicysta.
Młodość spędził w Algierze; od 1942 we Francji w ruchu oporu (założył grupę i pismo Combat). W pierwszym okresie rozwoju Camusa jako przedstawiciela egzystencjalizmu w jego twórczości znalazła odbicie centralna kategoria tej filozofii — pojęcie absurdu; pozostawało to w związku z odczuciami właściwymi człowiekowi żyjącemu w świecie pełnym nonsensów, prowadziło do nihilistycznej postawy autora; zbiory szkiców filozoficznych Dwie strony tego samego (1937), Zaślubiny (1938) i Mit Syzyfa (1942), powieść Obcy (1942, wydanie polskie 1958) i dramaty Nieporozumienie (1944, przekład polski Nowe Sygnały 1956 nr 9) i Kaligula (1944, przekład polski, Dialog 1956 nr 7). Drugi okres, wiodący do głębokiego humanizmu, poczucia solidarności ze wspólnotą ludzką, ilustrują: powieści Dżuma (1947, wydanie polskie 1957) i Upadek (1956, wydanie polskie 1957), dramaty Stan oblężenia (1948) i Sprawiedliwi (1949) oraz tom esejów Człowiek zbuntowany (1951, wydanie polskie 1958); wartościami nadającymi sens życiu ludzkiemu są według Camusa bunt i twórczość, jako świadectwa wielkości człowieka; Eseje (1971), Zaślubiny; Lato (1981), Dramaty (1987), pośmiertnie m.in. Śmierć szczęśliwa (1971, wydanie polskie 1998); 1957 otrzymał Nagrodę Nobla.
